in 1995 photographer toshikawa hiromi, called hiromix, received an award in a talent competition by star photographer araki. hiromix photographed herself and her sixteen year old friends with compact cameras. hiromix documented the life of kogiaru and yamamba girls, whose trademark are shortened school skirts, loose socks, ralph lauren jumpers, sun tanned skin and blond streaks (see tokyo episodes 1 & 8). hiromix became house photographer of tokyo’s music scene with portraits of cornelius, kahimi karie and denki groove. hello! i love you, was her first pop hit, which was released in 1999 on polystar. steidl publishers have printed a couple of hiromix photo books.
