the uk hip hop scene was very small in its beginning but it has been growing since the 1990s. uk’s hip hop heads used to meet once a month at scratch in the scala club. the night, organised by matt smooth & rob mac, was a must for mc’s, dj’s, grafitti artists and breakers from the whole of southern england. it featured live gigs by public enemy, de la soul, roots manuva  and others. it even had a record release called scratch volume one in 2001. the night continues irregularly at changing venues like the forum in kentish town. it ceased to continue at scala in 2009.
