underworld became household names in 1996 thanks to the trainspotting anthem ‘born slippy’. the mix of techno, rock and vocals is still the underworld trademark. they are perhaps the only electronic outfit who would not have survived without live gigs. as well as music carl hyde and rick smith have a second incarnation as graphic designers. they are members of the often imitated design collective tomato. the group later took on the work of completing entire sound tracks for films such as breaking and entering in 2004. underworld's 'barking' album was released in 2010. due to their involvement with danny boyle's trainspotting, underworld were selected as musical directors for the london olympic's 2012 opening ceremony.
